As detailed below, WorkSafeBC is in the process of proposing changes to its requirements as it pertains to Personal Floatation Devices (PFDs) for the fishing industry and as part of a consultation phase that ends Friday, June 1, 2018.
A number of significant changes are being proposed and it is important that individuals review WorkSafeBC’s documentation in full to gain a complete understanding of what changes are being proposed and why.
One important implication of the proposed changes is that WorkSafeBC will essentially require crewmembers to wear PFDs when they are on deck and the vessel is underway, or they are on deck and the vessel is not underway but the crewmember is performing work activities. This would require PFDs being worn when a vessel is at the wharf and work is being performed on deck.
As mentioned, WorkSafeBC’s consultation process facilitates feedback via the links below. Additionally, comments or questions can be directed to Fish Safe BC by email or phone in advance of the June 1, 2018 deadline.
