First Nations Specialist

Grieg Seafood BC Ltd., a dynamic and growing company in the Aquaculture industry, is seeking to hire a full-time Community Relations Specialist, based in Campbell River, BC. Reporting to the Director of a new division, First Nations & Community Relations, the Specialist is a member of a small team and will support the activities of the company’s community relations and corporate giving functions.  They have accountability for contributing to the development and implementation of a social licence plan which reflects the company’s commitment to building trusted First Nations and stakeholder relationships and a respected reputation where Grieg operates its salmon farms and hatchery. 

Grieg Seafood BC Ltd., a dynamic and growing company in the Aquaculture industry, is seeking to hire a full-time First Nations Specialist, based in Campbell River, BC. Reporting to the Director of a new division, First Nations & Community Relations, the Specialist is a member of a small team who will support the department’s activities engaging with First Nations in the traditional territories where the company’s salmon farming facilities are operating or may operate. This involves leading and participating in negotiations for impact-benefit agreements and/or other components toward positive associations with First Nations. 

They have accountability for establishing and maintaining relationships, using outstanding organizational skills to coordinate productive meetings between the company, First Nations and occasionally third parties, and utilizing their proven relationship-management skills to identify potential new First Nations partners. They use their knowledge and understanding of the impacts of First Nations issues to identify solutions and bring a respectful, professional focus throughout all communications with First Nations contacts.

Key Responsibilities

• Prepare for, lead or participate with the Director in negotiations with First Nations contacts on behalf of the company leading to an agreement.

• Prepare a record of the discussions including tracking of the issues, noting challenges throughout the discussions and identifying collaborative solutions.

• Oversee the implementation of concluded agreements commitments made by the company are met.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

• Working knowledge of the UN Declaration of the Rights of Indigenous Peoples, First Nations issues as they relate to legal decisions around Rights and Title and impacting BC Nations.

• Knowledge of the Fisheries Act, Land Use Act and associated regulations, aquaculture issues in BC and ability to stay current with relevant federal, provincial and First Nations’ regulatory policies, processes and programs.

• Full time flexible hours are required (able to work days, occasional evenings and weekends depending upon distances for travel).

• Willingness to travel alone and with others to rural and remote communities.

• Mature, culturally sensitive professional who enjoys seeking solutions where industry or regulations are constantly evolving.

• Excellent and effective verbal, listening and written communication skills supported by experienced record-keeping skills.

• Must have a valid BC Class 5 driver’s license.

Training, Education and Experience

• University Degree or under graduate degree in related education. Related education includes Aboriginal Studies, Natural Resource Management, Land Use Planning &

• Management, Public Administration, Geography, Resource Economics, Environmental, Land and Resource Management.

• Minimum four (4) years of direct experience preferably in an industrial setting with aquaculture, forestry or energy background.

• Knowledge of aquaculture sector an asset.

• Knowledge of First Nations issues and engagement experience an asset.

• Demonstrated experience leading or participating in negotiations with First Nations communities.
